The best modern classic books. This modern classics book list is my best guess about the books that matter from a period of not-quite 50 years in the second half of the twentieth century. Only twenty chapters in a book of pages of text makes this a difficult book to work through. (In addition to 66 pages of notes and 29 of index.) Chapters of thirty and forty pages without even page breaks on a topic as complex as world politics gets mighty tedious and confusing at by: Paul Johnson is a fine historian with a keen and insightful mind.
I highly recommend both "Modern Times" and " A History of the Jews. The quality of this paperback, however, does poor service. The paper is of a low grade and the density of the text varies across the page.
